Even if you can skirt by in high school without studying, you definitely wont in college. That is why it is so vital to practice good studying habits early on. There are, however, a lot of studying mistakes student make that makes it more difficult to retain information.

- Studying for too long all at once. Studying is so much more effective when broken up into smaller chunks over a longer period of time. That’s why you should never wait until the last minute to cram for the exam. Remember to take short breaks every half an hour while studying.
- Trying to multitask. It is actually impossible for our brain to truly multitask – we are just switching between things too quickly, which causes our focus to waver. To combat this, plan ahead and make a study schedule.
- Having too many distractions. Watching TV while studying or doing homework is a sure-fire way to make it as ineffective as possible. Turn off all distractions like your phone and television. If you need some background noise, you can try calming instrumental music.
