There can be a lot of anxiety for students leading up to their college entrance exams, like the SAT and ACT. Taking tests in general is stressful, but these tests are lengthy and students are often worried about getting into college based on their scores. However, being stressed in itself can actually hinder you from acing the exam!
Catherine Sheridan is a Chicago based finance professional and math tutor who specializes in SAT, ACT, and GRE prep. She shares her tips for staying calm during exam season:
- Have a plan. Work into your schedule when you will be studying and what dates you need to register for and take the exams. Working with a tutor, parent, or counsellor can be really helpful for this.
- Study over the course of a few months, rather than cramming for it all at once. Try to figure out your weaknesses and focus on those.
- Familiarize yourself with the test so you won’t be surprised on the day.
- Pack a bag ahead of time with everything you will need. Bring your ticket, an ID, sharpened pencils, erasers, and a calculator with extra batteries. Don’t forget snacks and water! You’ll want to stay hydrated and not be hungry while you’re trying to focus.
