If you have a child in school, they probably have some classes they excel in and enjoy, and other classes they don’t like at all. It is completely normal for children to struggle in school from time to time, including in math class. There are several reasons why they could be struggling with math.
Catherine Sheridan is a Finance Professional and Chicago-based math tutor. She specializes in college entrance exam preparation but is happy to assist students of all grade levels and abilities. Today she shares a few reasons that your child might be struggling in math class:
- The lessons aren’t being taught in a way that your child can learn. Talk to your child’s teacher about your child’s struggles, and see if there is a way they could deliver the information differently.
- They don’t understand the real-world applications of math. Sometimes math can be too abstract for kids to understand. Grounding the lessons in the real world can help them a lot.
- Your child might have math anxiety. They could become stressed when faced with math problems due to a fear of not getting the answer correct. The anxiety makes them less able to solve the problem.
- Your child may just need some extra attention from the teacher or a tutor.
- Your child may need to be challenged more. This seems counterintuitive, but if the lessons are too easy for them, they can become bored and frustrated.
- They may struggle with dyscalculia. Similar to dyslexia, dyscalculia makes it difficult for people to recognize numbers.
